Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities Symposium
The Annual Missouri Regional Junior Science, Engineering and Humanities
Symposium is held each spring at the University
of Missouri-St. Louis. Two hundred-fifty high school science students
and sixty accompanying teachers will be invited to attend the three-day
symposium. Expenses, including the hotel, meals, and symposium activities,
will be provided for selected participants. Other interested and qualified
individuals may attend on a self-paid basis. The symposium begins Thursday
at noon and lasts through Saturday noon.
Field Trips
Participants will have the opportunity to visit facilities of such groups
as Mallinckrodt Chemical Company, Sigma Chemical Company, Missouri Botanical
Garden, St. Louis Science Center, or St. Louis Zoo. Students and teachers
are invited to these research-based groups to have lunch and talk informally
with researchers, scientists and employees as part of the field trip activities.
Tours
Research open houses will be sponsored by the Departments of Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, Psychology, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Computing and
Telecommunications on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus to give
students an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the nature and scope
of university research.
Lectures
Internationally known speakers will challenge students with a wide range
of topics within the scope of the scientific enterprise. Past lectures
have included the Nobel Laureates Polykarp Kusch (Physics), George W. Beadle
(Medicine and Physiology), George Wald (Medicine and Physiology), Lars
Onsanger (Chemistry), Herbert Brown (Chemistry), Melvin Calvin (Biochemistry),
Leon Cooper (Physics), Rosalyn S. Yalow (Medicine and Physiology), Leon
Lederman (Physics), Henry Kendall (Physics), Richard Roberts, (Medicine
and Physiology), Sheldon Glashow (Physics), and Phillip Sharp (Physiology
and Medicine).
Challenging presentations have also been made concerning space travel,
UFO's, plant emotions, the Bermuda Triangle, psychology of animals, biofeedback,
psychical research, acupuncture and the search for the Loch Ness Monster.
Other activities will include discussions, workshops, career counseling,
mixers, and a banquet.
Student Paper
Students will have an opportunity to present papers on their own research
and listen to papers presented by other students. Student papers will be
judged by scientists on the quality and originality of research. Six student
participants will be awarded an all-expense-paid trip to the National Symposium
at a leading eastern university and a chance to compete with other students
for a chance to attend the Science Fortnight, an international meeting
of young scientists in London. Based on scholarship and science achievement,
the six top regional student participants will be awarded scholarships.
You can become a part of the annual JSEHS program
Any serious student who has conducted or is conducting a scientific
study is eligible to apply for the symposium. Since participation is limited
to 250 students, selection will be based on interest in or the conducting
of a research project, school science activities, and scholastic average.
Senior students that are able to submit completed research papers will
be given first priority. Students interested in science but who do not
meet all of these criteria can apply to attend on a self-paid basis. As
a general rule, teacher participation will be based on the number of students
selected with a ratio of five students per accompanying teacher from each
applying school.
