Facilities and Field Stations

The Department of Biology occupies Stadler Hall and the Research Building on the University of Missouri-St. Louis North Campus. These buildings include diverse research and teaching laboratories, including substantial capabilities in cell and molecular biology, biotechnology, gene sequencing, neurophysiology, small animal metabolism, geographical information systems (GIS), computer imaging, and sound analysis. In addition, the department maintains a fully-staffed small animal facility, new controlled-environment greenhouses, and a suite of environmental chambers. Also available are wildlife and field research facilities at Weldon Springs Experimental Farm (University of Missouri), the Tyson Tract (Washington University), and the Shaw Arboretum (Missouri Botanical Garden), all within 30 to 45 minutes of the UMSL campus. UMSL students also may use two field stations maintained by St. Louis University. These have living facilities, are especially suitable for aquatic studies, and are located approximately two hours north and south of St. Louis, respectively. Many areas within Missouri's extensive State Park system, including several pristine stands of forest and prairie, and within the Mark Twain National Forest are available for research, as well.
