You must unambiguously identify the plant you are studying.
Identify the plant's Family & state the correct Scientific Name of the Species you are using.
A Scientific Name = Genus species (Authority)
The
first part of a scientific name is the
Genus
The second part is called the
specific epithet.
The Authority can be abbreviated for well-known people
i.e. (L.) = Linneaus or
The Full Last Name of the Authority is used for lesser luminaries i.e. (Webb).
Examples = Webbium minimus (L.) or Webbium maximus (Webb)
The full scientific name with its authority must also be stated at the beginning of the
Materials & Methods,
the
Title
and the
Abstract!
Otherwise, it is customary to abbreviate the Genus and use the full specific epithet. (i.e. T. minimus).
Important Note: Latin or latinized words must be typed in italics. This includes the scientific name but NOT Families or higher taxonomic categories.
