Instructions for Computer

1. Turn machine on, both monitor and computer
2. Log onto the computer, Login: "pb250" Password: "taxon"
3. Next prompt, type "win"
4. Select icon, Netscape for WWW or Quicktime for viewing cd-rom
5. When finished, exit windows and at prompt type "logout"
6. Shut off machine

To supplement lab there are two tools with which you need to become familiar. The first is the internet. The computer in the lab is oriented for the Botany at the University of Maryland home page to appear when first starting to "surf the web." It also has several bookmarks set so that quick access to other web sites can easily be obtained. You should be familiar with these pages because they are useful supplements that will help your understanding of the material. Learning to use Netscape can only be done by actually sitting at the computer and exploring. The things you need to learn about Netscape are search engines (Alta Vista, Excite, HotBot Yahoo, etc.), web addresses, and bookmarks. Your instructor will give you a brief overview, but surfing yourself is the best way to learn.

The other supplement is a CD-ROM photo atlas that was included in your text. This requires a computer with Windows 95 or Mac System 7.x. To view the images you need to download a copy of Quicktime for your PC or Mac. The web address for Quicktime is http://quicktime.apple.com or http://www.apple.com. For full instructions on this process there is a read me file on the photo atlas which explains the process. Once you have a copy of Quicktime, you can view the images on the disc. The photos are listed in a hierarchical manner. To view a photo you must know the division, class, order, family, genus, and species. This process is done by simply opening the file of your choice until you reach a photo. Photos must then be closed and a new image can be opened. If the hierarchical order of a plant that you wish to view is unknown, a program called Paradox 7 can be used. This is automatically downloaded onto your computer with Quicktime. Paradox 7 allows you to type the genus or species and displays the path through the hierarchy. By clicking on view, the image will be displayed.

Note: This is a broad overview of how to use these tools. A great deal of detail is left out. Your lab instructor will fill in the details and answer any questions you may have.
