Nomenclature etc. MYRTACEAE. Trade and local names: karri(Trade, AUS). Status of protection under CITES regulations: not protected.

Tree. Geographic distribution: Australia.

General. Heartwood basically brown to red to purple. Sapwood colour distinct from heartwood colour. Basic specific gravity 0.75–0.84–0.95 g/cm³.

Vessels. Vessels present. Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels arranged in diagonal and/or radial pattern and no specific pattern (state 2 weakly developed), exclusively solitary. Two distinct vessel diameter classes present. Average tangential vessel diameter 85–165–215 µm. Average number of vessels/mm² 5–9. Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate, average diameter (vertical) 6–9 µm, vestured. Vessel-ray pits with distinct borders and with reduced borders or apparently simple, similar to intervessel pits, rounded or angular. Tyloses in vessels present, thinwalled.

Tracheids and fibres. Vascular or vasicentric tracheids commonly present. Fibres very thick-walled. Fibre pits common in both radial and tangential walls, distinctly bordered.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma paratracheal. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty and vasicentric. Axial parenchyma as strands. Average number of cells per axial parenchyma strand 4(–6). Axial parenchyma cells without contents.

Rays. Rays 12–16 per tangential mm, multiseriate, also if only few, 1 and 2 cells wide (33). Rays with multiseriate portions as wide as uniseriate portions present. Rays composed of a single cell type. Homocellular ray cells procumbent. Ray cells regularly with reddish brown contents.

Storied structures. Storied structure absent.

Mineral inclusions. Crystals not observed. Silica not observed.

Physical and chemical tests. Splinter burns to full ash. Ash bright white.
