Turraeanthus africanus (Welw. ex DC.) Pellegr. (Avodiré)

Nomenclature etc. MELIACEAE. Syn.: T. zenkeri Harms, T. vignei Hutch. & Dalz., T. klainei Pierre ex De Wild., Guarea africana Welw. Trade and local names: avodiré (D, CI, F, GB, NL), agbé, agbouain, Kakné (CI), apapaye, wansenwa (GH), apaya (WAN), engan (CAM), esu, kisanda, lusamba (ZRE), songo (RCA).

Tree. Geographic distribution: tropical Africa.

General. Heartwood basically white or grey to yellow. Sapwood colour similar to heartwood colour. Basic specific gravity 0.45–0.5–0.55 g/cm³. Interlocked grain and other fibre irregularities frequent.

Vessels. Wood diffuse-porous. Vessels in multiples, commonly short (2–3 vessels) radial rows. Average tangential vessel diameter 100–143–185 µm. Average number of vessels/mm² 7–12. Perforation plates simple. Intervessel pits alternate, average diameter (vertical) 2–4 µm. Vessel-ray pits with distinct borders, similar to intervessel pits. Tyloses in vessels absent. Other deposits in heartwood vessels present (yellowish or greenish).

Tracheids and fibres. Fibres very thin-walled, or of medium wall thickness. Fibre pits mainly restricted to radial walls, simple to minutely bordered. Fibres septate and non-septate (septa occasionally very inconspicuous). Septate fibres evenly distributed.

Axial parenchyma. Axial parenchyma paratracheal. Paratracheal axial parenchyma scanty to vasicentric. Axial parenchyma as strands. Average number of cells per axial parenchyma strand 4–6(–8).

Rays. Rays 4–7 per tangential mm, multiseriate, also if only few, 1–2–3 cells wide (mostly state 2). Rays with multiseriate portions as wide as uniseriate portions present. Rays composed of a single cell type, or two or more cell types (most rays homocelular). Homocellular ray cells procumbent. Heterocellular rays square and upright cells restricted to marginal rows. Number of marginal rows of upright or square cells 1 (rarely also 2–4).

Secretory structures. Intercellular canals absent.

Mineral inclusions. Crystals present, prismatic, located in axial parenchyma cells. Crystal-containing axial parenchyma cells chambered. Number of crystals per cell or chamber one. Silica not observed.
