Cultivation and Breeding:
Curly leafed varieties of cabbage already existed along with flat leafed varieties in Greece, in around the fourth century BC.
These forms, which were referred to by the Romans as Sabellian kale, are seen as the ancestors of kales. Today, one differentiates between varieties according to the low, intermediate or high length of the stem, with varying leaf types.
The leaf colours range from light green through green, dark green and violet-green to violet-brown.
Breeding aims:
The most important breeding aim is for a high yield of usable leaf.
Increased winter resistance and at the same time, improvement of the biological value through high dry mass and protein content are further key breeding aims.
