The biology Computing Facility provides computing support for the biology department office and labs. The facility consists of six computers, 1 manufactured by Silicon Graphics, an Indigo2 Extreme, and five manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation, four for research (a MicroVax 3100, a VAX station 3100, and two DECstation 5000s) and one MicroVAX 3100 for the office and administration. Most terminal connections to these machines are made through one of more than 175 personal computers on the network or from terminals attached to one of five Xyplex terminal servers.
The computers in the department are connected through a variety of networks, facilitating communication and program transfers. The facility also supports a variety of laser printers distributed around the department for output from the computers. The Computer Facility is staffed by two full-time computer specialists, Frances Moffitt and Dennis Aubuchon, for system management and general user consultation. The computer systems are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with dial-up and network login access from around the world. Users can send and receive electronic mail within the department, throughout the campus, and to most national and international networks.
