Cytochrome c
This is a 3D image of cytochrome c, a
small protein found in all living cells.
The red structure with the ball in the middle represents
heme, which is important for the function of this protein
in cellular respiration. The wide blue ribbon represents the
helical structures of the protein. The yellow structure is
part of a particular histidine that is important for activity of
cytochrome c. Histidine is one of about twenty amino acids that are
present in all
proteins.
This image was taken from the
Swiss Protein Database.
