International Union of Biological Sciences

The International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, established in 1919. Its objectives are to promote the study of biological sciences, to initiate, facilitate, and co-ordinate research and other scientific activities that require international cooperation, to ensure the discussion and dissemination of the results of cooperative research, to promote the organization of international conferences and to assist in the publication of their reports.

The membership of the IUBS presently consists of 41 Ordinary Members, adhering through academies of science, national research councils, national science associations or similar organizations, and of 80 Scientific Members, all of which are international scientific associations, societies or commissions in the various biological disciplines.

The International Association of Botanical and Mycological Societies (IABMS), formed of the botanical and mycological scientific members of IUBS, had its first formal manisfestation at the XIV IBC in Berlin in 1987. The IABMS became more clearly established with a formal constitution at the XV IBC in Yokohama in 1993. The IABMS is the body charged with the responsibility of ensuring the ongoing continuance of International Botanical Congresses.
