Tamarix spec.: a character tree of the West Sahara. Eolian sand accumulates at the root system that grows partially above ground giving after decades the impression as if the tree would be growing on top of a hill (see the last pictures of this plate). First picture: a mighty group of trees with an extensive root system (Algeria, January 1991)
