GA₃ is produced within coleoptiles and scutella. The hormone reaches the aleuron layer where it induces the synthesis and secretion of hydrolytic enzymes. These enzymes catalyze the breakdown of storage molecules within the endosperm. The resulting low-molecular substances serve as nutriments for the seedling (according to R. L. JONES and J. E. ARMSTRONG , 1971).
