A pit-field in the vessel wall of a Populus canadensis var. robusta shoot. The pits shown in the photo are also called contact pits since it is them that establish the contact with the neighbouring xylem parenchyma cells. The object is a coal imprint taken from the original biological specimen. (I. DÖRR, 1979)
