Informal Biographical Sketch

Alice Bergfeld grew up close to the German side of the German-Danish border. Born into a family fond of languages, she started learning English and Danish at an early age. She extended her knowledge of the English language during several visits to England, among them a two month summer visit in Sussex and Kent and a nine month stay in London. Back in Germany, she began to study biology, her special subject at school, at the Freie Universität (FU) Berlin. Tutoring pupils during her school years and her study she became interested in the communication of science, especially in its visual and spoken aspects. Also, she took a liking to computers, the Internet and programming. She did the dissertation submitted for her diploma at the lab of Wolf Frommer (Institut für Genbiologische Forschung (IGF), Berlin) and acquired her diploma in biology from the FU Berlin in 1996. In 1997, she joined the Botany - online project beginning as an editor, and now, too, designing the English homepage, co-planning and co-ordinating the IBC CD-ROM, and the preparations for the pkal workshop presentation. In her spare time she enjoys living with her friend Peer, inline skating, windsurfing, and cooking.
