Workshop Series C - July 22 - 25, 2001 Science for All: Integrative Biology
Introductions:
The World Wide Web: The Ultimate Information Source for Teaching Biology to Non-Majors:
Alice Bergfeld, Yolanda George, Peter von Sengbusch
We will present projects collected in our internet library (The Internet Library - Teaching Botany and Related Topics) focussing on our own project Botany online and on other non-major subjects. The session will include a discussion and - if possible some interactive part.

Report about:
ASPP Meeting, Baltimore, USA (24 - 28 July 1999) - Helen Ougham helen.ougham@bbsrc.ac.uk
From Baltimore we went on to St Louis (43 deg C in the shade the day we arrived) for the XVI International Botanical Congress. The size of the meeting was mind-blowing: 6000-odd delegates (some very odd indeed, including such SEB stalwarts as Dennis Francis and John Bryant) from every continent including Antarctica. The vast remit of the Congress included much that had an educational slant, including several posters, and demonstrations of electronic teaching aids. This was all emphasised by the wonderful CD-ROM given to every delegate. It included all the conference abstracts (also available from http://www.ibc99.org/) but much more too, including a large section on internet teaching which lets the user link to the relevant Web sites. I've been using "Botany Online - the Internet Hypertextbook" for a year or so already, but this ambitious project based in Hamburg is continuing to evolve, and the CD featured many of the recent developments, including the "virtual plant" growth models. You can get to the Internet site on http://www.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/biologie/b_online/e00/default.htm. The only minor snag is that the project originated as a German textbook, and parts of the text and associated material are still available only in German, though the English translation is an ongoing process (meanwhile, I'm learning German...). Other highlights of the CD-ROM, for me, were the interactive molecular models, ranging from intermediates in glycolysis to the light-harvesting complex of Photosystem II; and the demonstration of the interactive identification and information retrieval program Intkey (illustrated with a couple of sample databases, Grass Genera of the World and Flowering Plants Families, also on the CD).
Miami Museum of Science - Project START, a PT3 Catalyst grant, provides higher education arts and science and education faculty in six southeastern states (Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina) with tools and training to help prepare tomorrow's teachers to integrate technology-rich learning resources into the science curriculum
