Normanbya normanbyi
Synonymy: None | Distribution: Northeastern Queensland, Australia |
Common names: Queensland black palm | Conservation status: Vulnerable |
Adult
Seedling
This palm represents a monotypic genus (only species in the genus) from northern
Australia. The common name comes from the hard black "wood" at the center of the
trunk that was (and maybe still is) used to make spears by the aborigines. It closely
resembles the monotypic foxtail palm, Wodyetia bifurcata, which has become a popular landscape plant
in south Florida; however, the high water requirements make this species more difficult to
grow. Photos copyright © 1998, Jody Haynes; top photo taken at Fairchild Tropical Garden,
