48. Arecaceae (Palmae) - Palm; woody shrubs or trees; leaves large, fan-shaped or pinnately compound, with sheathing bases; invlorescence panicular, large, spathes often present; flowers small.

49. Araceae - Philodendron, aroid; North American species are herbaceous; plants often of wet habitats; inflorescence a spadix enveloped or subtended by a single spathe; flowers small or minute.

50. Lemnaceae - Duckweed; Small or minute (larger plants only a few mm in diameter), floating or submerged aquatics; flowring rare; reproducing vegetatively.
