Caenorhabditis elegans is a small, freeliving bacteriovorous soil nematode. Caenorhabditis is a member of the Rhabditidae, a large and diverse group of nematodes found in terrestrial habitats. Some rhabditids are pathogenic to or parasitic on animals. The phylogenetic position of the Rhabditidae, and of Caenorhabditis, is an active research topic.
