Approx. 85% of large subunit rDNA (LSU) was sequenced from ten taxa representing six genera of the freshwater red algal order Batrachospermales. These data were analyzed to help elucidate phylogenetic relationships. The resultant trees showed similar results to a previous phylogenetic study using 18S rDNA and rbcL gene data. The Batrachospermalean taxa formed a well-supported clade with the Acrochaetiales as a sister group. Within the Batrachospermales, the genus Batrachospermum was polyphyletic being variously associated with other genera. Lemanea appears to be a derived taxon. The utility of these sequence data in conjunction with 18S and rbcL gene data for better-resolved phylogenetic reconstruction will be discussed.
