SEASONAL VARIATION OF MACROALGAE FROM STREAMS DRAINING ABANDONED AND RECLAIMED COAL MINES AND NON-IMPACTED SITES

Ten streams were sampled monthly and 28 streams quarterly for macroalgae over one year. These streams were located along a gradient from acid mine drainage to reclaimed to clean streams. Physical and chemical properties measured included pH, conductance, metal concentrations, current velocity, width and depth. For canonical correspondence analysis, data were grouped by season. The greatest amount of species variance was explained by the spring (72.4%) and fall data (70.2%). Along the first axis pH was the most influential parameter. Comparing macroalgal taxa collected in monthly versus seasonal sampling, our results showed that numerous taxa were overlooked in the seasonal sampling. The relationship among stream water quality, macroalgal presence/absence and reclamation regulation.
