BOTANIC GARDENS FOR SAVING THE PLANT DIVERSITY.

S.C. Sharma, National Botanical ResearchInstitute, Lucknow - 226001, India

The fast depletion of biodiversity is a matter of global concern. With the loss of biodiversity, the survival of human beings is at risk on this planet. We are losing 60 hectares of forests per minute and one plant species disappears per day due to anthropogenic disturbances. The plants which are endangered must be collected, conserved in the Botanic Garden and highlighted to the masses. These plant species should be multiplied and brought back to the nature. Botanic Gardens are the last defense for the survival of the plant species. Botanic Gardens have to play an active role for the ex-situ conservation with special reference to rare and endangered plants specially n tropical and subtropical zones.
