XVI International Botanical Congess
18 genera of Agrostideae and related tribes of grasses were studied with respect to nuclear encoded 5S rDNA, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions between the 18S, 5,8S and 25S rDNA, and satellite DNAs by sequence analysis and in situ hybridization. Short sequence motifs within these moderately or highly repetitive sequences characteristic for certain groups were detected providing new perspectives for the application of genome specific markers in taxa which are closely related to the agriculturally important genus Avena. Genome relationships can be recognized in the 'core' genera of Agrostideae, some of which have not been studied molecularly or cytogenetically before.
