BOTANIC GARDENS: SHOP WINDOWS FOR PLANT SCIENCE

Ian Darwin Edwards, Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh (RBGE)

For 11 years the RBGE has, as partner in the Edinburgh International Science Festival (EISF), delivered an ever increasing programme of walks, talks, plays and shows, all in the name of science. The popularity of this programme and the rate at which it has expanded is perhaps a meaningful indication not simply of genuine public interest in 'science', but in a particular approach to science education. Among the most significant outcomes of involvement with the EISF is the opportunity to present a broader, more representative story of the work carried out by Botanic Gardens, in one sense, to dispel the purely 'pretty parks' notion often held of Botanic Gardens. The chance to link with and provide a forum of a range of other scientific organizations is also a primary feature. This talk will outline key features of the RBGE's association with the EISF and other work and will highlight some possible implications for the public dissemination of information on science in general.
