PHYLOGENY OF THE PORELLINEAE (HEPATICAE)

G.Weis (speaker), S.R. Gradstein & M.E. Reiner-Drehwald (University of Goettingen, Germany)

The Porellineae with over 100 genera in 3 families (Jubulaceae, Lejeuneaceae, Porellaceae) are the largest suborder of the liverworts. Phylogenetic relationships were analysed based on 70 morphological, ultrastructural and biochemical characters of sporophytes and gametophytes of 76 genera, representing all the major lineages recognized by Schuster (1984) and Gradstein (1994). The sporophytic data set (43 characters) resulted in 1 fully resolved, most parsimonious tree in which the Lejeuneaceae and the subfamily Lejeuneoideae are monophyletic, other groups are paraphyletic or (Cololejeuneoideae) polyphyletic. The results are being compared with the analysis (in prep.) of the combined set of gametophytic and sporophytic characters.
