PLANT/ANIMAL INTERACTIONS AND ETHNOBOTANY: EXPLORING AMAZONIAN ANIMALIA AND PLANTAE PHARMACOGNOSIA

Eloy Rodriguez (Division of Biological Sciences, Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. 14853 USA)

Explorations in the Amazonian jungles of Venezuela and Peru has resulted in the discover of novel and interesting biomredicinal products that play key ecological and physiological roles in plant-plant, plant-animal & human and plant-insect interactions. In this presentation, the role and chemistry of Yekuana botanicals from the Amazonas will be discussed, with some new insights on process of botanical discovery. We will also present new evidence on the interactions of bird-ant-plant interactions and the use of termite-chile-ant products as sex stimulants. Lastly, the evolution of medicinal and pesticidal use of plants by wild chimps and monkeys will be presented in which the natural products chemistry will be highlighted.
