Igor Loskutov, Curator of Oats Collection, N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry, 44, Bolshaya Morskaya str., 190000, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Based on the evaluation of species VIR world collection of under different methods were confirmed the genus can be divided into subsectios of sectio Euavena: Aristulatae and Denticulatae. A.macrostachya belongs to sectio Avenastrum. Aristulatae includes A.clauda, A.pilosa (series Iqualiglumis), A.longiglumis, A.prostrata, A.damascena (series Stipitatae), A.wiestii, A.hirtula, A.atlantica and A.strigosa (series Ibericae), A.barbata, A.vaviloviana and A.abyssinica (series Eubarbatae). Denticulatae includes A.bruhnsiana, A.ventricosa, A.canariensis, A.agadiriana, A.magna, A.murphyi, A.insularis, A.fatua, A.occidentalis, A.sterilis, A.ludoviciana and A.byzantina, A.sativa. It is suggested that the evolutionary pathway of series Iqualiglumis, Stipitatae, species A.strigosa and A.abyssinica reached their evolutionary climax. On the basis of detailed morphology and distribution we concluded that Denticulatae were involved in the evolution of hexaploids
