Morphological and sequence data from internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of rDNA and matK of cpDNA were used to study phylogenetic relationships in the Exochorda complex. The results were compared with proposed other data and supported the precious conclusion that the genus Exochorda is a conspecies. The monophyly of subsp. serratifolia was supported strongly by morphological and molecular data, while the monophyly of subsp. giraldii was supported moderately. Other populations from east China were grouped together. Relationships among other genera also supported the previous studies based on matK sequence, with Rosa as outgroups, placing Oemleria as the sister group to Exochorda. Spiraea and Prunus are more distantly related. Evolutions of morphological characters were discussed. A hypothesis was also presented to explain the origin and distribution of the genus. Key words: Exochorda, ITS, matK, morphology, phylogenetic relationship, Rosaceae.
