The objective of this study is to investigate a role for ethylene, a gaseous phytohormone, in the formation of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM). Ethylene (~ 0.1 ppm) applied to the rhizosphere of Pisum sativum L. cv Sparkle for 25 days reduced arbuscular colonization by Glomus aggregatum. Different microscopy techniques (light, confocal, scanning electron) were used to evaluate the effects of this hormone on AM formation. Extraradical hyphae exhibited vigorous growth in response to the ethylene treatment. The rate of appressorium formation was not significantly altered in ethylene- reated roots, however, the appressoria formed were irregular in shape, exhibiting considerable branching. The longitudinal spread of intraradical hyphae was limited and few arbuscules formed.
