NEPHROMATACEAE AND PELTIGERACEAE (LICHENIZED ASCOMYCETES) DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION IN RUSSIA

Alexei A. Zavarzin, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg, Russia

Intense studies of the order Peltigerales have been recently performed for several big regions of the World. The aim of this study was to revise material on two families Nephromataceae and Peltigeraceae collected from the territory of the Russian Federation and introduce this information into the world-wide study. The goal was also to conduct taxonomic treatment of several taxa described from this territory and apply statistical methods to delimit major specific characters in the groups. Total of 28 species of the genus Peltigera, 7 species of Solorina, 1 species of Massalongia and 9 species of Nephroma are documented for the region. Their distribution, habitat requirements and morphological and chemical variation were studied. Two species new for science are described and three new for Russia are documented. Statistical evaluation of major characters such as thallus morphology, outgrowths of the cortical layers, propagules, apothecial and spore features as well as major chemical composition allowed to determine major factors" to be proposed for species delimitation with the group.
