Xu Fengxia & Wu Qigen, South China Institute of Botany, Academia Sinica, Guangzhou 510650, China

Chalazal region morphology of endotesta in seeds of Manglietia (14 species), Manglietiastrum (1 species), Magnolia (39), Aromadendron (1), Talauma (10), Parakmeria (5), Woonyoungia (1), Alcimandra (1), Elmerrillia (2), Michelia (17), Paramichelia (1), Tsoongiodendron (1) and Liriodendron (2) was studied. The shapes of chalazal region of endotesta could be divided into two types: pore type and tube type (moat and stalk" used by B.H. Tiffney). A series of transitive shapes from pore type to tube type were observed. The authors suggested that pore type was primitive type and tube type was advanced one. As a character, chalazal region morphology of endotesta in magnoliaceous seed is not only to be able to use for diagnosis but also for indicating interrelationships and evolutionary trends of taxa concerned.
