Y. P. Wang, J. Xu and L. F. Lan, Dept. Of Biology, Sichuan Union University, Chengdu 610064, China.

Crambe abyssinica is an annual herb. After introduction and cultivation in China, oil content of its whole seed reached 34.48%, of which 62.50% was erucic acid. Some good characters, such as higher seed yield (1485~5250 kg/ha) and lower glucosinolate content in the meal, were found. The experiment of planting date and density in Chengdu area indicated that the planting date of C.abyssinica could be preliminary determined: from early October to mid-October, and the planting density of 150,000 plants/ha was more suitable. After single-plant selection, two new strains named N01 and B07 respectively were obtained. Multi-locational evaluation showed that N01 and B07 strains were superior to the control in the seed composition and yield. Therefore, C.abyssinica shows itself a promising oil crop which can be used in industry in China.
