SOCIAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE REMEDIATION OF STRESSED URBANLANDSCAPES: ISSUES AND OPPORTUNITIES.

Shubhada Wavikar, Mumbai, India

In urban areas, ecological remediation or restoration is subject to social values and perceptions. This creates issues as well as opportunities. Urban restoration has potential for education. It can benefit from traditions such as sacred groves in India. Yet, urban natural areas may suffer from misuse, vandalism etc. Literature notes potential conflicts such as lack of support for certain restoration activities, discontent with the 'look' of natural ecosystems, lack of ecological knowledge, and safety concerns. A short qualitative study was conducted as part of Master's thesis to explore some of these issues and scope of design in the North Woods, Central Park, New York. The study mostly corroborated the literature, and offered further insights. In India, though factors may vary, such a study could help plan for better awareness and use of natural areas in cities like Mumbai.
