A flavonoid survey was conducted for several geographically dispersed populations of Lotus glaber. The species has become a valuable forage legume for the Flooding Pampa in Argentina. Seeds were found to contain two flavonoid aglycones kaempferol and quercetin, two triglycosides of quercetin and a kaempferol rhamnoside, besides an unexpected finding of an isoflavone.Quercetin derivatives appeared to predominate, specially the aglycon. Their structures were elucidated by TLC means and spectral data, the structure of the isoflavone will be confirmed by MS techniques. The mentioned pattern is qualitatively the same among the populations examined but different from that of L. corniculatus. The comparisson of the flavonol chemistry of both species supports the taxonomic separation of their seeds. The testing procedure is licensed to ALETHEIAS Seed Laboratory.
