CHEMOTAXONOMY OF THE HYMENOPHYLLACEAE

Wallace, James W., Jr., Biology, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC 28723, USA.

The filmy ferns represent a large but well defined group primarily distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics. In the most inclusive sense, all of the species have been placed within Hymenophyllum or Trichomanes, other taxonomic treatments considered segregating the various species in to as many as 34 genera. Preliminary work supported the existence of two large groupings, those species that sequester flavonol derivatives belonging to Hymenophyllum s. l. and those that accumulate flavone and/or C-glycosyl-flavone derivatives belonging to Trichomanes s. l. Interesting chemical groupings were noted that accumulated both flavonols and C-glycosylflavones. Most importantly, some of the *chemically inter-mediate species* have *morphologically intermediate features* between the classic Hymenophyllum and Trichomanes. Keywords: Hymenophyllaceae, Trichomanes, chemotaxonomy, flavonoids
