Entire sequences of the internal transcribed nuclear spacer (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA were obtained from 24 species of Aegilops by direct double-stranded sequencing of PCR amplified DNA fragments. The length of ITS1 and ITS2 ranged from 220 to 221bp and from 214 to 216bp respectively, and more sequence variation was found in ITS2. Higher polymorphism was observed in some allo-tetraploids but not in the diploid species. Phylogenetic relationships among the taxa and the evolutionary directions of ITS sequences in the allopolyploids were discussed.
