GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION OF GRASSES (POACEAE) IN PERU

In Perú the grasses are distributed between 0-5000 meters on sea level, into the three biogeographical regions: Coastal, Andean and Amazonian. Actually, it is known 700 species included in 162 genera and 7 subfamilies. The greatest concentration and most diversity of species are into the Pooideae subfamily with 252 species (37%) located in the Andean region basically in the high Andean region (puna). So in this high Andean pastures the genera: Calamagrostis, Poa, Festuca and Stipa are the most frequent. In the Amazonian region the dominant grasses are the PANICOIDEAE subfamily with 245 species (35%), most of the species are located along river sides and very few into the forest itself. Finally, a list of the dominant genera in the diverse ecosystems is included.
