P.C. Trivedi (Dept. Of Botany, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur-302004, India)

The Indian subcontinent represents one of the greatest emporia of ethnobotanical wealth. Information have been collected on ethnomedicinal plants from different tribal communities in the second largest state of India. Over 250 angiosperm species belonging to 80 plant families and 12 species of lower plants are known to contribute drugs in the ethnomedicine of Rajasthan tribes. The largest number of drugs are leaf drugs followed by root drugs. The problem from which the largest number of drugs used are: diarrhea and dysentery, fever, guineaworm, rheumatism, snake bite/scorpion stings, fertility regulation including abortion, contraception and antifertility. There is an urgent need for further investigations on these ethnomedicinal plants for active principle and to test their safety and efficacy, to be used in health-care needs.
