Four NaCl treatments (10, 3000, 6000 and 9000 ppm) were applied to a salt tolerant cowpea genotype selected in CIBNOR, La Paz, B.C.S., México. The main goal was to evaluate the next photosynthesis (Pn) of cowpea under saline irrigations and to assess the use of chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) as a tool in studies of salinity. Pn was measured with a portable system, the CF was recorded with a Hansatech fluorescence monitoring system. Pn, and the CF variables Fo and Fv, had a negative correlation with salinity (r=0.70, 0.77, and 0.56, respectively). Pn decreased from 7.12 to 0.23 micromol.m2/s (10 to 9000 ppm). CF decreased at 9000 ppm. CF parameters did not change in the salt treatments 3000 to 6000 ppm of NaC1.
