PLANT ENDEMICS OF YEREVAN FLORISTIC REGION IN ARMENIA

G. G. Ter-Ghazaryan, Institute of Botany, Yerevan, Armenia, 375063

The flora of Yerevan Floristic Region in Armenia is comparably rich and specific (40% of the total flora of Armenia). The vegetation is mainly of xerophyle character. The major vegetation types include friganoid, tragant steppe, artemisia formations, sparse open scrub- lands, and close to rivers swamps. The main objective of the study was to identify the local plant endemics of the region. The list of local endemics comprises of 12 species: Centaurea erivanensis (Lipsky) Bordz., C.fajvuschii Gabr., C.vavilovii Gabr., Et Takht., Cousinia armena Takht., Allochrusa takhtadjanii Gabr. Et Dittr., Astragalus holophyllus Boriss., Isatis bushiorm Hovh., Euphorbia vedica Chatshat, Acantholimon vedicum Mitz., Linum barsegianii Gabr. & Dittr., Salsola tamamschjanae Iljin. The endemism of Armeno-Iranian flora and Yerevan Floristic Region as one part of it is of progressive type. Therefore, the endemic plants identified could serve an appropriate subject for the further research and better understanding of speciation processes.
