Of the 15 genera constituting Scandiceae subtribe Scandicinae, six are monotypic. Phylogenetic analysis of the subtribe, using molecular (rDNA ITS), morphological, and anatomical data, reveals that the number of genera should be reduced to ten with only two, Sphallerocarpus and Myrrhis, retained as monotypic. All genera are well delimited on the basis of fruit anatomy and morphology, characters that have long been regarded as essential in umbellifer taxonomy. Life history, habit, inflorescence, and leaf form have been found to be highly homoplastic, and infrageneric divisions based on these characters are not congruent with those inferred using molecular data.
