Sergey M. Snigirevsky. Inst. of the Earth Crust, St.Petersburg State University, St.Petersburg, Russia

Some new approaches to systematics of Archaeopteris are considered. Two new subgenera are presented : Archaeopteris with type-species - A.hibernica (Forb.) Lesq. 1880 - obovate or wedge-like, entire, SOMETIMES UNDULATE LEAVES, WITH CONTINUOUS MARGIN AND DICHOTOMOUS VENATION, Subarchaeopteris with type-species - A.macilenta Lesq. 1884 - flabelloid or wedge-like, marginal incised or deeply dissected, with dichotomous venation, segments wide to fimbriate, ultimate narrow segments with 1-2 nerves. Two new sections of Subarchaeopteris are presented too: Subarchaeopteris with type-species - A. macilenta and Archaeodissectus with type-species - A. fissilis Schmalhausen 1894. About 50 species of Archaeopteris have been revised.
