STRUCTURE AND STATUS OF A GROUP OF CICERCULA SPECIES, LATHYRUS GENUS

T. N. Smekalova, Dept. of Herbarium, N. I. Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry, St. Petersburg, Russia

A multiaspect morpho-anatomical analysis of a group of species belonging to Lathyrus L. sect. Cicercula (Medik.) Gren. et Godr. showed individuality of this group and confirmed correctness of regarding it as a subgenus, i.e subgen. Lathyrus (Medik.) Czefr., in contrast to C. Kupicha (1983) who considers these species within a type subgenus. The subgenus includes 21 species, 8 of which have been recorded for the former USSR. Aridization of the environment has lead to shortening of the life cycle and appearance of specific morpho-anatomical features in vegetative and generative organs. Differentiation of the subgenus is reflected in the system composed of 3 sections, 4 subsections, and 3 series identified mostly by the characters of flower and seeds color, presence of wings in the fruit, structure of the stem's conducting system, and the spermoderm surface character and structure. Intraspecific differentiation of polytypic species is reflected in species systems, intraspecific taxa are described by the characters of shape and color of flowers and seeds, number of flowers in the inflorescence, etc.
