SYSTEMATIC STUDY AND SOME NEW RECORDS OF THE MOSS FLORA OF NORTHERN IRAN

S. Shirzadian (Dept. Of Botany, Plant Pests and Diseases Research Institute, P.O. Box 1454, Tehran 19395, IRAN)

The moss systematic, on which rest other disciplines of related studies, has been rather neglected in Iran (author's country) due to the paucity of workers and non-availability of suitable illustrated moss floras, where no Iranian botanist has ever been interested in studying them. Mere listing of mosses based on sporadic collections made so far (mainly till seventies of the present century) by some foreign bryologists, however, proved of no value in determining the moss taxa of this interseting area. The present study, therefore, in continuation with the work recently started by the author, is undertaken to provide a taxonomic account of some Iranian moss flora, introducing 6 species and 3 varieties as new records collected from northern Iran, i.e., Alborz mountains and surrounding regions.
