CURRENT TAXONOMIC PROBLEMS IN THE APIOIDEAE UMBELLIFERAE) IN THE LIGHT OF IMMUNOLOGICAL COMPARISON OF SEED STORAGE PROTEINS

Victoria S.Shneyer, Komarov Botanical Institute, RAS, Sanct-Petersburg, 197376, Russia

Immunological comparison of seed storage proteins from species of 85 genera of most tribes of the Apioideae revealed relationships among the genera notably differing from traditional groupings of the Umbelliferae, based on morphological characters (Bentham's, Drude's, Koso-Poljansky's et al.). The majority of presently accepted tribes (Smyrnieae, Apieae, Coriandreae) appeared to be unnatural, being artificial conglomerates of unrelated genera, parts of which are closer to genera of other tribes (i.e, the affinity of Prangos, Ferulago, Angelica and Seseli was found). Some large genera (i.e. Angelica and Peucedanum from Peucedaneae s.l.) also demonstrated great heterogeneity. Many new small groups of related taxa have been revealed, which partly correspond to the newest published phylogenies inferred by DNA sequences.
