CLOSING A CHAPTER ON FLORIDEOPHYCIDAE SYSTEMATICS: 8 YEARS & 300 SSU SEQUENCES LATER

Gary W. Saunders, Biology, University of New Brunswick, NB, Canada

The author and his collaborators have spent the past 8 years generating SSU rDNA data for representative Florideophycidae. As this work draws to a close the author addresses the question are we closer to understanding evolution among the species of Florideophycidae? Emphasis will be placed on the dramatic new directions in which evolutionary perspectives in this group of algae have been led as a result of these data. Remaining conflicts with traditional concepts will be explored. The talk will present up-to-date results and reflect a taxon sampling of greater than 300 species. Areas for future research will be highlighted, at least from the perspective of what the SSU data couldn't resolve, while acknowledging that what has been resolved is still open to challenge and experimental testing by other methods and systems.
