MOLECULAR SYSTEMATICS OF TRIBE INDIGOFEREAE (LEGUMINOSAE-PAPILIONOIDEAE)

N. P. Barker* and B. D. Schrire**, *Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, **2. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK

The tribe Indigofereae comprises 7 genera: Phylloxylon, Vaughania, Indigastrum, Microcharis, Rhynchotropis, Cyamopsis and the large pantropical genus Indigofera. Efforts to resolve generic relationships in the tribe using morphological data have provided conflicting results. This paper attempts to a) test monophyly of the ingroup using a range of Millettieae and Baphia (Sophoreae) as outgroups, b) establish if the anomalous Indigofera ammoxylum (DC.) Polh. should be resurrected as an 8th genus Bremontiera DC., c) elucidate relationships among genera using sequence data from the cptrnL intron and trnL-trnF spacer DNA sequences, as well as the nITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) region. Independent trnL-F and ITS analyses (and combined total evidence" analysis) and discussion are provided.
