THE RUSSIA'S FAR EAST CENTER OF THE PLANTS SPECIES DIVERSITY IS UNDER THREAT

Tatiana G. Sapozhn, Ecology Research Institute of Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Khabarovsk 680063, Russia

In according to the data of the World Resources Institute 26% from all remaining in the world undeveloped forests are represented in Russia. The predominate part of the forests are in Siberia and Far East, where forested mountain ridge Sikhote-Alyn' comes to shores of the Pacific Ocean. Here the global phytogeographical boundary between boreal and southern-eastern-asian vegetation types is situated. The prevention of unforestation of these unique unrenewable plants communities is high important. When loosing the selfrecovering conditions the number of centers of endemism will become the hearthes of ecological degradation. The existing tendencies of the rare, endemic and relict plants populations reduction will get unreversible treats. The expanding clear-cut prevention in Sikhote-Alyn' is in critical importance for the local tribes of the indigenous peoples forced to survive last 8 years barely balancing between onslaught of floodings resulted by timber harvesting in the upper streams and non-excellence of the legislation. The permanent support to all initiatives of local communities, public, governmental, scientific institutions for prevention of Sikhote-Alyn' ecosystems destruction plays significant role for the establishment of the alternative ways of landusing.
