POLLEN DIVERSITY IN SOME MODERN MAGNOLIIDS

F.B. Sampson, School of Biological Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, P.O. Box 600, Wellington, New Zealand

An illustrated account of pollen morphology of Magnoliidae, including recent unpublished studies. This survey explores the extent to which pollen types and possible evolutionary trends in these basalangiosperms can be linked to the results of a recent combined molecular and non-molecular cladistic analysis of angiosperms (Nandi, Chase & Endress, Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 85:137-212, 1998). Particular consideration is given to comparing pollen of the magnoliid II" clade, with the more typical magnoliid I" clade within which the monocots are grouped and which is more closely related to higher dicots (eudicots).
