XVI International Botanical Congess
In vitro antibacterial activity of different organic and aqueous extracts of bark of Terminalia arjuna was tested against selected bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes, Proteus vulgaris Pseudomonas aeruginosa Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis by using disc diffusion method at he concentrations of 10 mg/ml - 50 mg/ml. All the extracts exhibited activity except hexane and dichloromethane crude extracts. The effective results of bacterial activity were confirmed by dilution techniques (3 mg/ml - 50 mg/ml - Minimum Inhibitory Concentration). The above results were supported by phytochemical analysis of various components, which were found to exhibit specific activity against pathogenic bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The above results confirmed the usage of these barks in traditional medicine.
