PLANT DIVERSITY IN BANGLADESH AND CURRENT NOMENCLATURE OF ROXBURGH PLANTS FROM BENGAL

M.A. Rahman, Dept. Of Botany, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh

The eastern part of the Flora of Bangladesh is under tropical rain forest and it is one of the richest biodiversity areas in the Indian subcontinent. Over 5000 angiospermic species are representing throughout the country under more than 200 families. Of these, more than 1000 tree species are distributed in the tropical rain forests of Cox's Bazar, Cittagong and Hill Tract districts. Grasses, bamboos, canes and herbs are dominant in Sylhet and other parts of the country. Mangrove is an important characteristic evergreen vegetation in the coast of Bay of Bengal and Sal" forest is the another characteristic deceduous forest in the dryer part of Bangladesh. Willium Roxburgh listed more than 1000 species from Bengal in his Hortus Bengalensis (1814) and Flora indica (1832). An Index of these plants of Roxburgh from the area of Bangladesh have been prepared with the current nomenclature including family and local names.
